Perhaps You Are Queen for Just Such a Time as This

This meditation is based on a passage for September 20, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Esther 4:4-17

Reflection and Question: A central theme here is Esther’s courage to help save the Jews from a pogrom against them. This passage explains the genesis of her strength. Mordecai’s challenge to Esther is worth memorizing to give you courage in similar moments: Do not think that even though you are in the king’s palace that you will escape. If you keep silent at a time such as this, relief will rise for the Jews from another quarter but you and your family will perish. Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for such a time as this. Esther then instigates a brave plan. For what courageous action have you been brought to this moment?

Prayer: Holy God, Esther knew the penalty was death for anyone who approached the king unbidden. She knew that You would save Your people, whether through her or not. May we choose as she does, to be Your instrument for good, no matter what. Amen.
